…Brother is Only Legend

Perhaps you’ve already seen this. Still, we’re going to add to the madness because it’s fun, and because sometimes even very serious China watchers like us enjoy watching videos about crazy men with knives wearing underwear and threatening their bosses.

…At the concert a video was shown of the leader of Tibet’s government-in-exile, the Dalai Lama, saying, “In the life of people, freedom, democracy, justice and the rule of law are [things] we all benefit from.” The entire audience erupted in thunderous applause. The Dalai Lama said, “The young people of Taiwan have a great responsibility for shaping the future of freedom, democracy, ideology, and material life in Taiwan.”

“Beauty and Ugliness”

It was the first time unadulterated music had ever plucked at my heartstrings like that. Tears came, and I quickly wiped them away, trying valiantly to keep my body from shaking from the trembles that accompany sobs, afraid that those sitting behind me might see. In the past, I had heard of people who cried while listening to music, but I had never experienced it myself. It really felt quite marvelous.

Last Thursday, the US State Department published its annual report on global human rights which, as one might expect, included a hefty 44-page section on China’s various (alleged) misdeeds. Also unsurprisingly, human rights violations in Tibet featured heavily, earning their own section and the following condemnation in summary:

Today the New York Times published a piece called Now Hip-Hop, Too, Is Made In China about the emerging Chinese hip-hop scene. It asserts that hip-hop’s popularity is growing fast in China among young and working class people despite the fact that rappers cannot broadcast their music through mainstream channels.
