Ai Weiwei Quick Update

Some of you may know that Ai Weiwei was on the wrong end of some fists a month ago when he went to attempt to testify on Tan Zuoren’s behalf in the latter’s trial (to no avail). You may also know that he had brain surgery yesterday for a cerebral hemorrhage, possibly due to the [...]

A Phone Call to the PSB

The following is a translation of a part of this post from Ai Weiwei’s blog. It’s a transcript of a phone conversation between him and a PSB officer, and we think it’s interesting in several ways. The analysis, though, we leave up to you.
Backstory
On the afternoon of Sept 9th, Liu Yanping saw she had a [...]

Since we translate Ai so frequently, and since there’s been such discussion about him in the comments as of late, we thought it might be useful to offer a little perspective. For comparison, we’ll translate the some of the comments on Ai’s blog as well as some of the comments on an Anti-CNN post. Both [...]

In sixty years, [I] have never seen a ballot. There isn’t education for everyone, there isn’t medical insurance, there’s no freedom of the press, there’s no freedom of speech, there’s no freedom of information, there’s no freedom to live and move where you choose, there’s no independent judiciary, there’s no one supervising public opinion, there are no independent trade unions, there’s no armed forces that belongs to the nation, there’s no protection of the constitution. All that’s left is a Grass Mud Horse.

We’ve ordered them from most recent to least recent, the titles are translations of the titles of his posts, [...]

With Twitter blocked and his Fanfou apparently censored already*, it’s been a rough couple of days for Ai Weiwei, but the new blog remains free. Today, he posted this piece. It’s very short, and very, very poignant. Please, please read this.

You once were a member of the Communist Youth League, and grew up accepting the education of the Party. Wherever the Party says we should go, we should follow! Don’t fool around all day with people like this Ai Weiwei! You’re being used by Ai Weiwei and foreign anti-China forces…

As you may have already seen elsewhere, Ai Weiweis blog has been closed. Well, the one hosted on Sina, anyway. His bullogger blog is still up, but it doesn’t contain some of the most recent posts everyone else is translating.
As previously mentioned, Danwei and the China Digital Times have done the translation legwork here, we’d [...]

When I had finished my meal and was heading home, the landlady came over anxiously and said, “Last night seven police officers came looking for you, they said they were looking for someone from Beijing who spoke Mandarin; they are checking all the guesthouses in Nanba. They were pianjing [片警, a common nickname for community police responsible for public order and security], I think they were looking for you.”

Three days later, Ai Weiwei’s blog is still silent. ChinaGeeks has confirmed that there was a brief update a few days ago that was quickly harmonized, entitled “Let Me Sleep a Bit Longer, Mom, I’m Tired”, which contained some updates and personal anecdotes about some of the students Ai’s project is attempting to memorialize. It’s [...]
