Foreign Teacher Uses Nude Photos to Extort Female Student for 100,000 RMB After Being Dumped
ChinaNet, March 27 report: A young American man teaching at a Zhuhai English academy who dated and had sex with a college student [at that school] was not willing to be snubbed and sought to use nude pictures he had taken of her to extort 100,000 RMB. Yesterday a Zhuhai Intermediate People’s Court passed judged that Scott’s [the American] behavior constituted blackmail and he is expected to serve a three-year prison sentence. After his sentence is served he will be deported from China.
After hearing the verdict, the defendant tearfully said “It’s so terrible,” and asked the judge for a light sentence, saying he was willing to sweep the streets to prove he can be a good person. The defendant is currently appealing for a lighter sentence.
Explicit pictures taken during a “one-night stand” with a foreign teacher
22-year old Scott, an American male, was teaching at a Zhuhai English academy as an oral English teacher in 2008. During this time he met a student named Luo Moumou and the two hit it off. Last year on the evening of October 25, Scott invited Luo to his home to eat. Scott said in his testimony that the two “had a great time that day,” and that afterwards the two engaged in sexual intercourse. After Luo came out from showering, Scott used his cell phone to take three pictures of her. In one of the, half of Luo body is exposed.
Scott said that when he took Luo’s photo she was aware and did not protest. The next day Luo went to Hangzhou in Zhejiang province. The two kept in contact, but before long, Luo told Scott that she already had a new boyfriend and told him they should break up. Scott believed that Luo had tricked him and was determined to get revenge on her.
Apprehended while extorting 100,000 RMB
On November 30 2008, Scott used QQ to send Luo one of her own nude pictures and said that he possessed a number of nude photos and videos with her. He said that if Luo broke up with him, he would distribute all of these materials to others and threatened to blackmail her. During the investigation, Scott described to police that he and Luo finally agreed that Luo would give Scott 100,000 RMB in return for all of the explicit materials.
On December 3 2008, Scott arranged to meet Luo for the exchange. After receiving the 30,000 RMB that Luo had brought, Scott refused to hand over his cell phone’s memory card and declared he could only give the pictures and videos over after Luo had given him the remaining 70,000 RMB.
According to testimony, after Scott threatened to extort Luo, she reported to the police. Scott was arrested at the scene of the transaction.
Pleading to the judge for a lighter sentence of sweeping the streets
Yesterday at a Zhuhai Intermediate People’s Court a verdict was heard; the court sentenced Scott to an expected three-year prison term, after which he would be deported from the country.
Scott pleaded with the judge, saying that he would be willing to clean the streets for a lighter sentence and prove he can be a good person.
Some thoughts:
1) The article doesn’t specifically say that Luo was a student of Scott’s. Should / would Scott have received a different sentence had that been the case?
2) 100,000 RMB is a lot of money. Unless Luo is extremely wealthy, I don’t see how Scott could have expected his little plan to really work out.
3) I am a bit confused by the “sweeping the streets” cry for mercy that Scott came up with. Either a) this is a figure of speech that I’ve translated incorrectly, b) Scott meant it figuratively and the translator at the court took it literally, or c) Scott is living in a fantasy world.
4) There are stories everywhere about foreign teachers having affairs with students though I have never personally seen this. If it really is common, it wouldn’t be surprising to see an underlying level of animosity towards foreign teachers in general for the perception that they are all lechers. People with more English-teaching experience can chime in.

Moumou is a not a real name, it’s just a title given to protect the girl’s ID. I think. And cleaning the streets is not a figure of speech, it means exactly that. I venture.
Nice translation Chris, and a good heads up to all the English teachers out there: Having sex with your students, then trying to extort them? Bad idea.
I changed things so the front page displays your first paragraph now instead of the introductory note by copy and pasting that paragraph into the “excerpt” text field below the main post text field. I wrote a Style Guide a while ago (we’ve had some new writer apps who weren’t up to snuff) and have been meaning to mention it to you, it has some info on little stuff to make posts prettier if you’re into that kind of thing.
As a further point, surely the requirement to have a college degree and 2 years’ work experience meant that at an age of 22, his visa was improperly issued/he was working illegally?
As far as I am aware, the requirement for a ‘Foreign Expert’ is that they should have a university education, meaning that sometimes even those who have not yet graduated can teach. Yes, some English teachers do have sex with their students (I’d say about 10-20%) – most English teachers are about the same age as this guy, and go from living as ordinary people in the west, to being the centre of attention – and some give into temptation. However, it is not foreign teachers per se that have a reputation for lechery and lax morals in China, but foreigners as a whole – the stereotype of the ‘lustful foreigner’ is one commonly found on Chinese television and even heard in comedy sketches.
A visit to, say, Scarlet’s in Nanjing, or Park 97 in Shanghai will reveal that there is at least some truth to this stereotype. However, a walk along the average Chinese city street city will show you enough ‘massage parlours’, ‘late night barbershops’, KTVs and honest-to-god knocking-shops as to show that China is hardly the paragon of chastity that some Chinese imagine it to be. The numerous cases of sex being exchanged for grades by Chinese lecturers, which occur in pretty much every university I have had more than a passing acquaintance with in China, also shows that the ‘foreign experts’ are not the only ones subject to temptation.
In this particular case, this guy would appear to be yet another example of the kind of odd-balls who make up at least part of the expat scene. The bizarre way in which he attempted to blackmail a girl, the ridiculous sum he asked for, and his ridiculous plea for mercy, all show that he probably isn’t the most mentally stable of types.
Some, just some, good colleges have an unwritten rule for hiring foreign teachers: women and old men.
I know about that rule. Let me tell you about women and old men in china, they get around plenty. That unwritten rule has more to say about their wishes for women and old men (in both china and abroad) than the reality. No one wants to believe their 50 year old wife is cheating on them and no one wants to believe the nice quite old retired foreign teacher man is sleeping with the students, but everyone knows that’s not reality.
一厢情愿
Yeah but you can’t deny the fact that biologically young men have a bigger libido than senior citizens (please, no stories about horny old people).
They’re not trying to eliminate the problem, just minimize the probability.
Your point about minimization is fair. But, I certainly do have some stories to tell you about older people. (I won’t go senior citizen on you, if you start at over 40 or 50, then you have some breathing room.) As for their intention. If I were an administrator, I’d be most frightened of older men, over 40 or 50, marrried or not. Guys with libidos in their 20s or 30s, what can you do? Older creepy guys over 50? Which lustful foreigner do you want trolling your campus? The guy in his 20s or the creepy older ‘professor’ type who’s actions look more like child abuse than anything else. I’d much rather have that story be about the 22-year old guy who tries to blackmail the chinese student for 100,000, (really not that much money) than the 70-year old guy they discover who’s done the same thing or worse, has a harem. But either way, the problem isn’t going to be solved anytime soon (barring huge harem-related scandals) because it’s intimately tied into the entire ethos of the new chinese future/education. Fixing the 英文热 that has helped to further cripple an already problemsome educational system is not something I imagine happening anytime soon.
Oh that image is disturbing… Not that I have anything against old people or something, but a 70-year old professor with a hougong… In this case I would blame the Chinese students.
Actually if the students are not forced or threatened with the possibility of bad grades, I’d blame them first in any similar case.
No, the English craze won’t die out that easily. Not for at least another 30 years.
[...] continues to impress with their translation of a remarkable story of another American Chinabounder-type. Only [...]
The details if true reveal just another cad (perhaps surnamed Kennedy) and the punishment condign. Would that the incident follows him with deportation home. Also, as – let’s just say an “older man” – I can assure everyone that age is no guarantee of good behaviour but is more inclined to be cleverly discreet.
As for the university degree and two years experience – I’ve heard that that is only required in Beijing (maybe also Shanghai?) for a visa. Or at least only enforced there. And even in Beijing, “two years experience” can be acquired while in school and there’s also the option of hiring someone illegally on an F visa.
You guys are missing the point here. The problem is not the sex. People will always find ways to f*ck – with the same species or not. The problem is the extortion in this case. Sweeping the streets is supposed to be a humiliating punishment in China if the person is not a paid janitor, much like picking up trash along the freeways in the west except that you get much more attention doing it as a foreigner in China.
The point is not lost, don’t worry. The extortion is certainly noteworthy, who does that? The exchange rate is horrible! 14,00 US! Really? It reminds me of people who rob Gas stations for 800 dollars, but at least they really need the money.
The difference is people don’t let their kids shit in the streets, in America at least. Is picking up trash on the side of the highway supposed to be humiliating? The cars are moving too fast to see anything. I always thought they made people do that because it was dangerous , often very hot or cold oustide, and was not high on the trash priority list.
species? will people fuck whatever species they want? I think the lions may quash that demand.
Typical pointless blogging, translating a most vital article about how bad the foreigners are in China… Oh my goodness, some teachers actually sleep with their more than keen students??! Wow, that’s news.
Actually, as mentioned, the news is that it’s a foreigner blackmailing a Chinese person – this must be a first in China – and not vice versa, with some little strumpet secretary who seduces her foreign boss and then threatens to tell the wife, a story I have heard over and over again….
@ No Way Sis
Thanks for the tip, that makes a lot of sense.
@ others
I guess the reason that I think he’s crazy for asking to sweep the streets is that I can’t imagine him getting such a light punishment. I’d much rather pick up trash on the side of the road for 3 years than spend 3 years in a Chinese prison.
I’m not sure this story is true. Blackmail? And for such a small amount? This sounds like one of those fake stories that projects the author’s fears. Who is this Scott? Zhuhai is a pretty modern place, surely some local foreigners would know him and/or be aware of his case. And in the picture, his face is conveniently hidden, and his hair is suspiciously blonde.
Oh yeah, and I forgot, as a 22-year-old, he’s ineligible for a work visa – you have to be at least 25. That’s also a pretty speedy completion of a bachelor’s, another requirement for employment.
@Vel – Don’t know why your banging on about how this guy might be have been in-country illegally. I’ve known ‘foreign experts’ who were 19 years old and on legit visas – the university was able to employ them as they had had ‘a university education’ in as much as they were half-way through a degree. I myself came to work in the far east when I was 21, and arrived in mainland China when I was 22, although British degrees don’t have the extra year of catch-up that US degrees have.
No, the scum thing about this guy is his bizarre attempt at blackmail. Visas have nothing to do with it.
Re: Women and old men – in my limited experience, the craziest of the expat odd-balls were always the older ones. I’m not trying to be down on expats – why would I when I was one for 5 1/2 years and almost certainly will be one again? But I have to admit, whilst there’s a lot of great people working overseas, there’s also a lot of complete nutcases.
There may be a number of foreign teachers engaging in inappropriate relationships with their students, but such relationships are nothing new between male Chinese teachers and their female students either. The term”后门” has been around for quite some time.
@hsknotes
I smell sour grapes. For those who live in a tent city in the US, the exchange rate is not so horrible after all. Disgusted by Chinese who shit in the streets? Then don’t flock there to lick their shit holes when they are done! I am sure they’ll manage without your passionate “help”.
I never did quite get the whole sour grapes thing, isn’t that just wine? Don’t people like wine? Sour milk, I get. It tastes horrible.
Yes, the residents of tent city would happily take below what is considered the rate of poverty in the U.S, along with everyone else. I imagine if you live in a tent city you would also take nickels and pennies off the ground, but what are you getting at? 15,000 seems a little bit low for what sounds like a count of felony fraud and extortion. Just as the 800 dollars people rob gas stations for seems quite a bit risky seeing the downside.
Who said I was disgusted by the street shitters? I was pointing out the differences! Don’t be looking for offense when there is none. In America we piss on our streets, not shit in them. Wow, big difference. I was just pointing out that cleaning up the streets in china carries an element that is absent in America. Cleaning up the streets in america is one thing, but if you knew people shit in them, it would take on a whole different meaning. I was talking about this because someone was confused! Period!
As for the rest of our your outrage, I have no idea what caused it, sorry.
May I suggest the following change, just as an example of how the translation could be improved?
The sentence — “After his sentence is served he will be deported from China.” — would become both correct and idiomatic if re-written like this:
After serving his term, he shall be deported.
The source of this story surely has a good collection of odd cases.
In the related stories below:
- Bathing house took naked pictures of female customers and blackmailed them…
- Man made own girlfriend a call-girl, took naked pictures of “customers” and blackmailed them…
- Man used old sex pictures to blackmail ex-girlfriend into having sex with him again, twice…
- Missing girl’s family received naked pictures of the girl with a blackmailing letter…
- Girl taken naked pictures by classmate while passed out was blackmailed for 50000RMB…
- 46-year-old woman raped and taken naked pictures by young boyfriend was blackmailed for 80000RMB…
Blackmailing with naked pictures seems to be the trend in this country.
I wonder where this guy got the idea.

If the basic reporting is true:
He meets a girl well above his circumstances but she does it out of curiosity or for spite, or to jilt someone else, or to pass a bout of self-pity or boredom, whatever, but neither as a man or personality does the mutt leave much impression and so she’s off and it’s over. He gets a case of the ass, tries to blackmail her into sex, she refuses, then the mutt ups the ante to hurt her. She’s got more pride than money so she goes to the police.
Yes, it’s that simple. And the guy’s a mutt no matter how many times others have been fucked over by whomever of whatever race or nationality.
Just my two cents:
This guy’s an idiot, and obviously naive in the extreme, to have even considered extortion as an option. But he is not a ‘cad’ for having consensual sex with a Chinese woman, per se, even though one should question the ethics of such behaviour if she were his student.
I guess the question now is not the severity of the sentence so much as the liklihood of a lecherous laowai getting mistreated in the slammer. My guess is a reduced sentence following grovelling apology, then early release accompanied by a hefty fine and deportation.
Of course he’s not a cad ipso facto for having consensual sex with a Chinese woman, he’s a cad – a man who behaves dishonourably, especially in affairs of the heart – for his actions after the fact. That seems to be clear to everyone; well, almost everyone.
he has ginger hair. case closed.
As regards old men being more desirable employees in English schools in China, I have to disagree. I taught in an private school aimed mainly at college students and professionals in Shanghai and while I myself did not see anything untoward in my school, a South African female friend who worked at another branch with several middle aged men saw some sad behaviour on both the old men and students’ parts.
As she was a young woman, she tried to warn off her young female students from spending time outside school and dating these men but more often than not she was ignored. Unfortunately, some naive Chinese women believe it’s worth engaging in sexual acts with old foreign men for the sake of attention and the possibility of them spending money on them rather than realising that middle aged single men travelling the world alone and beginning teaching ‘careers’ in their late life are usually destitute or severely damaged individuals. They take what they can get and unfortunately it is provided for them.
This guy deserves everything he gets. Students need to be able to trust their teachers. If you you have the urge to have sex with a student do us all a favour and go home and take a really cold shower. If this doesn’t work get out of the country you are in and return to your own country ASAP and rethink your career path.
Scott is retarded in the first place to dare do such a thing, and secondly to not accept the 30,000 when he had the chance.
Wally are you a woman? I am sure this S. African woman was just jealous of the attention she wasn’t getting. Old or not, married or not, she was just jealous. Bitter feminist savior mentality.
Garry thanks for the lecture. How much per hour?. I do agree that students should trust their teachers but the rest is just silly writing.
Are there really any ethical or moral issues if the student is nearly the same age, not a minor, and is not an actual active student of the teacher’s? A 22 year-old guy, of any nationality, teaching at a school with college age girls would be insane, or gay, to not get a girl, especially if the girl wasn’t even his student.
The blackmail stuff is ridiculous and I hope he enjoys prison.
Unfortunately, at several Chinese newspapers it’s common practice for reporters to make up morality tales. I have a feeling this might be one.
It doesn’t add up. The motive is unclear, plus there are the inconsistencies that Chris points out, not to mention no other media has reported that a U.S. national was sentenced to three years in a Chinese prison last week.
@Anonymous – I am entirely willing to believe that this story was made up. On the other hand, I am also entirely willing to believe that is true.
@hsknotes
I took your incoherence as confusion but now I think you’re just dumb.”15,000 seems a little bit low for what sounds like a count of felony fraud and extortion”? By whose standards? If we could all be rational, there would be no crime. “Don’t be looking for offense when there is none”. Absolutely right. Pissing or shitting on the streets are the same act using different holes! Had you finished high school you’d know that you can’t just be a little pregnant or sucking someone’s diiick is still considered sex even if you didn’t use your vagina! It seems the American educational system has failed you. You couldn’t come to China to teach “oral” English even if you tried. Sorry.
@ Pacific,
Yes, I am a woman and I can assure you that my friend was not jealous. As the post mentioned these were middle-aged men with little to offer physically or intellectually. My friend receives plenty of male attention but like myself or any other woman under 25 would never aim to attract old and sexually deviant men (many of whom visit prostitutes on a regular basis). Rather than any “bitter feminist saviour mentality” her advice was rooted in concern for these young women and their health, and I would assume if you yourself were a woman or had concern for women you too would warn them away from such obviously dangerous encounters.
Again, the issue is the extortion. The guy is scum.
First, he tried to blackmail the student into continuing the relationship, then, failing that, he blackmails her for money?
Scum.
this is sick. what a freak!! how could he do such a thing to this girl????
It shames me to think that a teacher would do something so horrible to his student. He is here trying to help not destroy. WTF?
It makes things look bad for us “laowai” trying to help out.
I never touch my students.
One of the Zhuhai posters at Dave’s ESL Cafe has actually known this Scott guy for a couple of years. He described him as “not the brightest bulb in the box.”
hahahahahahahaha hahahahahhhhhhhhhhahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
I heard americans are stupid but didn’t know that they are immoral too.
This story is ridiculous, if it is true so that dick/vagina sucker’s place is in prison.
Have a great time in prison, Scott.
[No needless nationalism, thanks. Try again. -Ed.]
“please baby baby baby stay with me, i love you” he said.
SAD SAD SAD! hard to believe a american white male would be so desparate ……strange.
I know the guy. He worked at Fountain in Zhuhai. He was a complete putz. Zero social skills or common sense. He deserves what he gets.
Very very nice! My post is deleted.Needless nationalism?
I see it’s useless to leave comments here. Anyway they will be deleted.
I would say you are a nationalist not me, you are deleting my posts here.
dre,
What is” SAD SAD SAD”? Lol! haha you can give a call that “a american white male” and help him dry his tears and rescue him from desperateness. But you have to hurry …
Ahmoq, your post was deleted because you called people from another country “bitches” for no reason. We attempt to maintain a civil atmosphere in the comments here. If you can’t play nice, you don’t get to play at all. Don’t like it, take your trolling elsewhere, kthxbye.
dre,
and I bet he does need you now. You will take away his loneliness and desperateness and he will be so much happy that ‘ll take nude pictures with you next time :). And it doesn’t really matter whether you are f or m.
C.Custer,
I am very much touched by your sayings, tears came to my eyes….
Dave, how’d he get the visa + job despite being only 22?
This was a crime of passion. He should not go to prison. Sure, he abused his position.
